1990 Reserves Premiership

1990 saw both the Seniors and Reserves play North Shore in the Grand final at West Oval. While the Firsts were unsuccessful the Twos were premiers under the leadership of
captain-coach Jack ‘Sucka’ Redden and vice-captain Mark Hagebols. The final score St Marys 16.12.108 to Nth Shore 13.12.90 indicated a close affair but St Mary’s were never seriously threatened, particularly given the quality of the cattle we had on the paddock that day.

It was that long ago I can't remember that much about the game, in fact I can't even remember who got our best player. There are, however, a few things that figure prominently in my mind from that day. I can remember Ian Wilson dominating in the middle, Brett Feldman taking a screamer and a 15-year- old Scott Loving kicking four sausage rolls. Looking at the team photo and reading through the playing list from that team is a whose who of St Marys Football Club past and present.

The recently retired and silky skilled Timothy Dobbyn was there, with brown hair no less; a little angry bloke called Mick O'Malley played in a back pocket and would of course go on to win a Commonwealth boxing title, five players would go on and play in the 1992
premiership side (Shane McMahon, John Nhill, Brett Feldman, Michael Hosking and
injury (Ian Wilson and Ian Courtney); Michael Hosking would be judged best
player in the 1992 premiership; Andy Halloran would go on to be a dual Senior Best and Fairest; the head trainer that day, Tony Dunstan, would eventually become Senior Chairman of Selectors; Ian Courtney would go on to coach the Reserves; and no less than five players are still playing more than a decade on. Other notable players in the photo
include the legendary Rock "The Sack" McMahon, Mina Koutstaftis, David
"Blockhead" Stewart and our resident CUB rep Herby "Horse" Trewin.

Jack Redden is often heard boasting about his coaching moves on that day …………but lets face it, with the calibre of player we had that ‘Spoorsy’ could have got us home.
